Wärtsilä joins Climate Leadership Coalition

In May 2018, Wärtsilä joined the Climate Leadership Coalition (CLC), a network of leading companies, research organisations, municipalities and cities, as well as private individuals. The CLC is on a mission to mitigate the impact of climate change, which is closely linked with Wärtsilä’s purpose and strategy.

Founded in June 2014, the Climate Leadership Coalition (CLC) brings together public and private companies – as well as individuals – that are leading by example, striving for carbon-neutrality by electing to operate in a sustainable and responsible manner. Through committed and rigorous decision-making, CLC partners are continuously developing their ways of working, driving innovation, and encouraging the sustainable use of natural resources.

In practice, the CLC provides information and advice to its partners on global environmental trends and best practices, engaging with leaders in industry and government to advance low-carbon solutions. The CLC also initiates research development across various industries to accelerate the implementation and acceptance of more sustainable alternatives. Finally, the CLC functions as an enabler for cooperation, both nationally and internationally, promoting awareness of the latest developments in the fight against climate change.

According to Jouni Keronen, Executive Director of the CLC, “Our partners include companies that have succeeded in creating competitive solutions to tackle global environmental challenges. Alongside tackling the threats posed by climate change, the CLC aims to push the competitiveness of companies and research organisations while improving their ability to utilise the business opportunities that exist with greener and cleaner solutions. Fundamentally, we believe that profitable, sustainable business is the most efficient way to respond to the risks arising from global warming.”

In line with our strategy, 2019 will see the CLC continuing its efforts to develop Nordic and international carbon-neutrality projects across the forestry, agriculture, energy and transport sectors, and to run initiatives that encourage consumers to adopt more climate-friendly decision-making strategies. We will also be working on the development of more effective carbon pricing mechanisms.

Partnering for a cleaner tomorrow

Wärtsilä joined the CLC to actively participate in and support the mitigation of climate change. The company is performing a pivotal role in enabling efficiency and low emissions in the marine and energy markets. The CLC can support Wärtsilä in developing these areas further.

Keronen believes that Wärtsilä is a valuable partner within the CLC, playing an important part in enabling a cleaner future for both the energy and shipping industries. “There are many ground-breaking projects underway where Wärtsilä can play an important role. I admire the active approach the company has taken in developing solutions for cleaner technologies and innovation across the industries in which they operate.”
